How to make bath bombs

Bath bombs are something simple, fragrant, and certainly welcome if you want to give a do-it-yourself spa treatment. I realized, however, that I never shared a recipe that showed the process and the realization of bath bombs! In this post, I will show you how to make beautiful and scented bath bombs with few ingredients!

DIY Bath Bombs

When you think about bath bombs, our thoughts automatically go to “Lush – Fresh Handmade Cosmetic”. Their bath bombs are among the most popular, for colors, intense fragrances, and dreamy foam. Not having at home all the ingredients that make up a Lush bomb, I decided to create my own do-it-yourself version with few ingredients and without spending a fortune.

How to make bath bombs

To make our bath bomb fizz, we’ll have to get some baking soda and citric acid, basic ingredients that we can’t avoid. When these two ingredients come into contact with water, a reaction will be triggered that will lead to the formation of carbon dioxide. This, in the form of bubbles, will be the reason why bath bombs ‘fizzle’ and turn quickly on themselves. The addition of a surfactant to the recipe will be responsible for the production of foam.

NB: If no surfactant is used in the recipe, no foam will be created.

Bath Bombs Recipe

Let’s see what we need to make a bath bomb:

Tools

Before you start, I recommend that you wear rubber gloves and a mask to protect yourself against airborne dust.

Bath Bombs | Procedure

To prepare a bath bomb, we first have to combine all the powders in a bowl and mix them well. In a second bowl, we weigh the shea butter and melt it in a bain-marie or microwave. Then, add a few drops of vanilla fragrance to give the right scent to our bath bomb.

Before combining the contents of the two bowls, we put some water in a sprayer. This will help us to add the water in a controlled way without triggering the reaction between bicarbonate and citric acid.

Now that all the ingredients are ready, we pour oils into the powders and start mixing. To ensure a compact and stable consistency, we spray water while continuing to mix. When we press the ingredients together and they remain well compressed and stable, we have obtained the right consistency. We divide the mass into two equal parts, adding red and green dyes in each one respectively. Let’s mix in order to even out the colors and insert the product in the two half spheres. Then, we press them together for a few seconds until we get our bomb.

We leave it for 24 hours at rest covered with a towel to prevent it from absorbing moisture and after this time our bath bomb is ready.

Where to buy bath bombs

The procedure is simple and I admit also very funny. If the idea of creating bath bombs attracts you but you do not have time and a way to make them, you can find not very expensive bath bombs on Etsy or Amazon. Here are some ideas.
