DIY lip balm

DIY Lip Balm Recipe

In Winter our lips need extra protection. For this reason, I have thought to make a DIY lip balm recipe to protect my lips during these cold days. This DIY recipe will only take less than 2 minutes but will help us to protect ourselves against the cold temperatures of this winter.

What kind of Wax did I use?

To make a lip balm it is essential to use a wax, which can give it the right solid texture to our balm. In this recipe I decided to use two types of waxes: beeswax and carnauba wax.

Beeswax vs Carnauba Wax

Beeswax is widely used in lip balms. I wanted to include it in this recipe because beeswax keeps our lips hydrated and healthy at all times. This wax, in fact, forms a protective and emollient layer that prevents the loss of water from the outer layer of the skin.

Carnauba wax also has emollient and protective properties such as beeswax. It is made from Brazilian palm leaves, making it 100% natural. The main difference with beeswax is the high melting point (80 – 85 ° C). This means that it will take more time and heat to melt. For this reason, I wanted to use this wax in the formulation because it will be able to make the lip balm more consistent and also suitable to be stored in a lip balm tube.

What you will need | DIY Lip balm recipe

Creating a Lip balm takes less than 5 minutes and a few ingredients.

DIY Lip balm recipe: Procedure

Preparing a lip balm requires only a few ingredients and does not involve any complicated procedures.

Let’s start

  1. weighing the waxes and butters in a glass jar
  2. melt them in the microwave or in a bain-marie. NB: The carnauba wax will need more time to melt
  3. add essential oils (optional)
  4. pour into a tube

To customize it, I decorated the stick with colored tape. I used one with glitter to make it more elegant and perfect for a gift.

  1. Oh, this is a very cool tutorial. I live in a warm climate, but I still, use lip balm all the time. So I have to buy them all the time. I’ll follow you tutorial and start making them with essential oil. Thanks!

  2. This is so incredibly cool! What a great DIY project. And with Christmas around the corner, this is a great idea for a homemade stocking stuffer. Thanks!

  3. Yes! I made one a few months ago with a friend’s daughter. I think creating a lip balm can be an activity for children from 6 years old and up. 🙂

  4. This is so cool! Had no idea making lip balm would be so easy! Now I am going to have to try this instead of buying them all the time.

  5. As someone who is TOTALLY addicted to her chapsticks (I have them all over the house), I am super intrigued by the idea of making my own. I’m definitely going to have to give this a try and see how it goes!
